Mrs Warden Write your own name on this slide

3 towns 4 roads This slide explains what ‘towns’, ‘roads’ and ‘regions’ are.

2 regions

How else could we join up the 3 towns? Students could answer these on mini whiteboards 3 Towns? Regions? 3 Roads?

3 1 Towns? Regions? 3 Roads?

How about this one? 3 Towns? Regions? 6 Roads?

3 Towns? Regions? 6 Roads?

3 Towns? Regions? 6 Roads?

3 4 Towns? Regions? 6 Roads?

Fill in the table on Networks 1 Better words… Towns Roads Regions A group of nodes and arcs is called a network Nodes Arcs Regions Give the students the sheet of 20 networks and the table worksheet. They should fill in Networks 1 for the 20 networks. Fill in the table on Networks 1

N + R – 1 = A Is there a pattern? It’s to do with adding and taking away… Can you spot it? N + R – 1 = A Some students may get this far with a bit of guidance. They may get it in words, in which case, try to bring out the use of letters. If they don’t get it, show the formula anyway and use it to ask questions like If I have 2 nodes and 3 roads, how many lines will I need? etc Can you draw that to check?

Doodles Try drawing each of the doodles below without removing your pencil from the paper and without retracing a line that you have already drawn. Which ones can be drawn?    A printable copy of this page is at the end of the presentation. This could be printed off and put into plastic wallets for students to trace over. They could come up to the board to try these.  

Odd and even nodes Odd nodes have an odd number of arcs coming out of them… Even nodes have an even number of arcs coming out of them…

2 odd nodes or 0 odd nodes = traversable Turn your sheet over… Fill in the table… Traversable means you can draw it without taking your pencil off the page. Which ones are traversable? Is there a pattern? It’s to do with the number of odd nodes This is actually on the Further Maths A-Level! It’s unlikely you will get this far in an hour, but you never know! 2 odd nodes or 0 odd nodes = traversable

Doodles Try drawing each of the doodles below without removing your pencil from the paper and without retracing a line that you have already drawn. Which ones can be drawn?
