Stage Three: Experiencing the Radical Republic

Experiencing the Radical Republic Stage Three: Experiencing the Radical Republic King Louis XVI recognizes the National Assembly The Controller-General describes the financial crisis The National Assembly discusses and proposes solutions Robespierre announces a revolutionary plan The National Assembly tries the King Robespierre leads the radical republic The Reign of Terror ends

In the Year of Our Lord, 1791 Dear Noble Baron Louis-Charles, This new Constitution of 1791 is absurd and detestable. Though I have signed it, I regret it. I have contacted the Royal Court in Austria and plan to flee there when possible. From there, perhaps I can organize support for the return of the monarchy. God bless you in the times of shame. Respectfully, Louis XVI, King of France

Maximilien Robespierre

The Execution of Louis XVI June 21, 1791, royal family attempts to flee King signs new Constitution, but vetoes all revolutionary ideas New National Convention elected September 1792 “A war of people against kings” documents found showing the King wants power back! King Louis convicted of treason and sentenced to death “…I die innocent of all the crimes of which I have been charged.” Queen Marie Antoinette executed October 1793

Robespierre’s Reign of Terror National Convention, led by Robespierre, to save France from “enemies of the nation” Spring 1794, French defend their country against other European Nations 1792 National Convention established ‘Year One’ of the French Republic Are French ‘virtuous’ enough for Robespierre?? New Courts try many citizens for treason Over 40,000 executed July 1794 Robespierre receives same fate

Napoleon Bonaparte Napoleon Bonaparte ruled France 15 years Centrally controlled police state Kept some revolutionary reforms abolishing feudal privileges securing the advances of the middle class and the peasantry. Lost war with Russia, abdicated from throne in 1814
