Early College Awareness 10th Grade Parents, Stuyvesant High School, March 2017

First, what your kids don’t need to do just yet… Stuyvesant HS is a pressurized academic environment; college planning need not add to that stress in the 10th grade Students don’t need to know where, or how, they’ll apply They don’t need to identify an intended major They don’t even need to take the ACT or SAT yet It is okay if they wish to start exploring potential colleges, careers, or majors, but uncertainty or confusion at this point is totally normal

College Counseling at Stuy Begins in depth in February of the junior year Includes several presentations/workshops for students and parents Families can meet with assigned college counselors starting in March 2018 Students will also be able to arrange individual appointments with their assigned college counselors in that spring term Our massive college fair for juniors & parents is at the end of April, and nearly 200 admissions reps will come to Stuy in the fall to meet with seniors The fall of senior year includes workshops for students and parents on both admissions and financial aid College counselors check in with each senior and are available to parents by email/phone as needed

What should you and/or your child be doing now? Activate Naviance account and ensure parents have active accounts Perform their best in each class Get deeply involved in activities of interest outside of the classroom Establish positive relationships with teachers and guidance counselor Plan on preparing for ACT or SAT and taking at some point next year (PSAT again in Oct.) Take SAT Subject Test(s) at the end of the year (if applicable) Begin to explore potential colleges or majors this summer and next fall (campus visits, web tools, etc.) Arrange for a productive summer activity Review College Office Handbook next fall

Upcoming College Counseling Events for “youngsters” at Stuy The Hidden Ivies Panel- April 6, 7:00pm CUNY Night at Stuy-May 15, time tbd- learn about the CUNY system and its prestigious Macaulay Honors College
