9.04 Globalization Make sure you understand the following: Income Equality Deindustrialization Bill Clinton ending “era of big government” NAFTA US financial system in the 1990sGreat Recession Environment Personal privacy

Globalization Outsourcing and offshoring Decline of manufacturing and increase growth of related jobs, healthcare, tourism, and finance

Balance of Trade During the 1980s there was a negative balance of trade President’s George H.W. Bush and Clinton created international organizations to reduce barriers between trade members Asian-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC)- Australia, US, China, Japan, and Singapore World Trade Organization (WTO)- work with members to work out disputes over trade and reduce practices to limit trade North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA)- Canada, Mexico, and the US. Eliminate duties and quotas. Most of our exports go to Mexico and Canada.

Environment 1989- EPA announced air pollution was destroying Earth’s ozone layer causing climate change Lawmakers have passed federal and state laws to place greater restrictions on pollution causing materials and activities (Greenhouse gases, fossil fuels) Critics argue there isn’t enough date. Also argue laws will cost more than any benefit Exxon Valdez- oil spill in Alaska (1989) 10 million gallons of oil spilled BP and Gulf of Mexico in 2010. 200 million gallons of crude oil into the Gulf

Technology Working online, earn a college degree, go to school online!! Critics argue that being “Constantly connected” contributes to a sense of detachment from physical locations and people as work and social interactions are online However, users of social networking sites tend to receive more social support from their peers, more politically active (e.g. Arab Spring; Occupy Wall Street) Privacy and health have become a huge concerns

Collaboration opportunities online the next two weeks! Any Questions? Collaboration opportunities online the next two weeks!
