What was happening in the 1970S IBM was the leading provider in large mainframe computers for business. There was very little thought given to creating a computer suitable for the individual or for your desk in a office by the established business world. In California a large number of amateur technologists were trying to make a computer. Many of these people were members of hobbyist clubs and attended the West Coast Computer Faire.
IBM PC In 1980 IBM realised that the desktop computer was here to stay and they needed to be in the market to compete. A team was established to attempt to create a desktop computer in one year. In order to create a rival computer they could not design their own components, So their PC was created out of readily available components: keyboard, monitor, processor, memory and hard disk. The IBM PC could not be patented as it used Open Architecture. The operating system was provided under license by Microsoft.
Microsoft In 1980 Microsoft owned the basic programming language. In order to provide an Operating System to IBM they purchased Q-DOS from Seattle Computer Products for £50,000 and then licensed it to IBM $50 per machine. They made a fortune. The success of Microsoft is based of both their ability as programmers and the business sense.
