Do Now (in your reading section) Define genocide. Before this unit, were you aware that genocides still occur in the world today? List/describe any genocides you may have heard of other than the Holocaust. http://www.teachertube.com/video/genocide-81733

Other Major Genocides 5,900,000-11,000,000 killed in the Holocaust from 1933-45 1,800,000-7,500,000 killed in the Soviet famine from 1932-33 1,700,000-3,000,000 killed during the Cambodian Genocide from 1975-79 All committed by the Ottoman Empire during and after World War 1 800,000-1,800,000 killed in the Armenian Genocide from 1915-16 275,000-750,000 killed in the Assyrian Genocide from 1915-23 200,000-1,000,000 killed in the Greek Genocide from 1915-18

Answer the following questions as best as you can (one per group) Where is the violence occurring? Who is committing the violence? Who is the violence directed toward? Why? When did it begin? How many have been killed? Otherwise abused/affected? Besides killings, what other kinds of violence/discrimination are occurring? WHY does genocide happen? (Hint: Do all of these situations/places have anything in common?) How can we prevent genocide in the future? Do you think these numbers (death tolls) are accurate? Why or why not?

Debate Does the United States have a responsibility to intervene in these genocides? Or are we better off “minding our own business?” In your notebook, list as many reasons as you can to support each side of the debate. Then decide which side you agree with. Be prepared to share these reasons and debate this issue.
