Lesson #5 Bridging Decimals
Try adding in your head… 1.8 + 2.3 + 4.7 + 2.4 Like bridging whole numbers, decimals can also be bridged from one another. Try adding in your head… 1.8 + 2.3 + 4.7 + 2.4
1.8 + 2.3 + 4.7 + 2.4 = ? Think … 1.8 + 2.0(of the 2.3) = 3.8 then 3.8 + 0.3(of the 2.3) = 4.1 then 4.1 + 4.0 (of the 4.7) = 8.1 then 8.1 + 0.7 (of the 4.7) = 8.8 then 8.8 + 2.0 (of the 2.4) = 10.8 And finally 10.8 + 0.4(of the 2.4) = 11.2
Confused ? Well, what you do is … add the whole number first, then…. the decimal portions next.
Let’s look at another example… In your head, Add 5.23 + 2.56 + 1.35
5.23 + 2.56 + 1.35 = ? Think 5.23 + 2.00(of the 2.56) = 7.23 then 7.23 + 0.50(of the 2.56) = 7.73 then 7.73 + 0.06(of the 2.56) = 7.79 then 7.79 + 1.00(of the 1.35) = 8.79 then 8.79 + 0.30(of the 1.35) = 9.09 And finally 9.09 + 0.05(of the 1.35) = 9.14
