Ratio and Proportion Vocabulary
A ratio says how much of one thing there is compared to another thing.
Using the ":" to separate the values: 3 : 1 Ratios can be shown in different ways: Using the ":" to separate the values: 3 : 1 Instead of the ":" we can use the word "to": 3 to 1 Or write it like a fraction: 3/1
A ratio that compares two quantities with different kids of unites is called a rate.
When a rate is simplified so that it has a denominator of 1 unit, it is called unit rate.
Fraction like 20/1/2 are called complex fraction Fraction like 20/1/2 are called complex fraction. Complex fractions are fractions with the numerator, denominator, or both that are also fractions. Complex fractions are simplified when both the numerator and denominator are integers. Complex Fraction
Like a unite rate, a unit ratio is one in which the denominator is 1 unit.
The process of including units of measure as factors when you compute is called dimensional analysis. Dimensional Analysis
Two quantities are proportional if they have a constant ratio or unit rate. For relationships in which this ratio is not constant, the two quantities are nonproportional. Proportional
Ratios with the same value are equivalent. Equivalent Ratios
The coordinate plane is a type of grid that is formed when two number lines intersect at the zero point. Coordinate Plane
The number lines separate the coordinate plane into four regions called quadrants.
An ordered pair is a pair of numbers, such as (1,2) used to locate or graph points on the coordinate plane. Ordered Pair
Zero on the coordinate plane is called the origin.
A proportion is an equation stating that two ratios or rates are equivalent.
A rate of change is a rate that describes how one quality changes in relation to another.
Constant Rate of Change This means the rate of change between two quantities is always the same. Constant Rate of Change
In a relationship where the change in the Y value is always the same as the change in the X value. This ratio is called the slope of the function. Slope
The slope tells how steep the line is The slope tells how steep the line is. The vertical change is sometimes called the “rise” while the horizontal change is called the “run.” Slope = rise run
When a line goes uphill from left to right Positive Slope
When a line goes downhill from left to right Negative Slope
When a lie is horizontal Zero slope
When a line is vertical Undefined Slope
