Grammar Unit 2 Phrase Clause Independent/ Dependent Clause Subordinating Conjunction Pronouns

Phrase A phrase is any collection of words that behaves like a part of speech, like a noun phrase, an adjectival phrase, or an adverbial phrase. Ex: -my brother Stu -in a different shade of blue -with elegance

Clause A clause is any noun phrase plus a verb; they can be sentences, but they don’t always have to be. Ex: -The wizard who cast a spell The falcon soared majestically While my guitar gently weeps

Independent Clause An independent clause is a sentence that has a subject and a verb and requires no extra information to understand. Ex: I ate the pineapple The bear roared

Dependent Clause Dependent clauses, which start with subordinating conjunctions such as "while," "that," or "unless," give background information but cannot stand on their own as sentences. Ex: -because it was delicious -unless I’m mistaken
