Beginning with Lent “Lent stimulates us to let the Word of God penetrate our life and in this way to know the fundamental truth: who we are, where we come from, where we must go, what path we must take in life...” — Pope Benedict XVI Sources: https://www.ibtimes.com/lent-2019-inspirational-quotes-lenten-season-2772037; https://proxy.duckduckgo.com/iu/?u=http%3A%2F%2Ffitnowtraining.com%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2012%2F02%2FLenten40Days.jpg&f=1

Reminders help (from Romans 10) Two kinds of justice How justice based on faith works All’s and whoever’s How to benefit

Two kinds of justice 5 Moses writes this about the righteousness that is by the law: “The person who does these things will live by them.” 6 But the righteousness that is by faith says: “Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?’” (that is, to bring Christ down) 7 or “‘Who will descend into the deep?’” (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead).

The second completes the first. Different basis Based on (the Mosaic) law Based on faith in Christ Different goal Law: promise of life Faith: salvation or deliverance The second completes the first.

How justice based on faith works 8 But what does it say? “The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart,” that is, the message concerning faith that we proclaim: 9 If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.

Mouth Heart Jesus is Lord (see Romans 1:4…) Profess faith Saved (future) Heart God raised him from the dead Believe Justified (present)

Regarding justice: “Just as you used to offer yourselves as slaves to impurity and to ever-increasing wickedness, so now offer yourselves as slaves to righteousness leading to holiness. (Rom 6:19) Regarding salvation: “The hour has already come for you to wake up from your slumber, because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. (Rom 13:11)

All’s and whoever’s 11 As Scripture says, “Anyone who believes in him will never be put to shame.” 12 For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile—the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, 13 for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

No difference between Jew and Greek Equal under sin: “For we have already made the charge that Jews and Gentiles alike are all under the power of sin.” (Romans 3:9) They have the same Christ: “to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. (1Corinthians 1:24) The same Lord Only one (see 1 Cor 8:6) Literally “being rich toward all” See Romans 2:4 “the riches of his kindness, forbearance and patience”.

How to benefit Moral Reminder Getting (back) in sync

Moral reminder Simple moral reminders can help us all fight against temptation and respond more ethically. Source: Dan Ariely, The (Honest) Truth about Dishonesty (London: HarperCollins, 2012), 39-53

“Your mind is on vacation but your mouth is working overtime.” Getting (back) in sync “Your mind is on vacation but your mouth is working overtime.” (Mose Allison, 1962) Source: https://www.lyricsfreak.com/m/mose+allison/your+mind+is+on+vacation_21032526.html.

Use this reminder during Lent “Lent is a time for discipline, for confession, for honesty, not because God is mean or fault- finding or finger-pointing but because he wants us to know the joy of being cleaned out, ready for all the good things he now has in store.” ― N.T.
