Brazil

History Originally home to millions of natives. 1494 Treaty of Tordesillas divided South America between the Spanish and Portuguese. Portugal received Brazil; created huge sugar plantations.

Portuguese conquered natives, forced them to work, and killed most of them off; today only 200,000 left. After natives died sent in African slaves. Gained independence in 1822.

Culture Successful blend of native, Portuguese and African cultures. Portuguese language largest Catholic country mixed African beliefs.

Economy 10th largest economy in the world. Abundance of natural resources and people. Minerals, oil, steel plants, hydroelectric power. Large gap between rich and poor; trying to urbanize to create a middle class. Favelas  poor slums, have huge crime and drug abuse.

Brazilian Life Great variety of life, music and holidays. Carnival is most famous festival. Samba music is Brazilian dance with African influences. Capoeira is a famous martial arts in Brazil.
