Warm-up, 2/14, page 158-159 Happy Valentine’s Day everyone!! Don’t forget to copy the questions in the warm-up section of your journal. What is a counterclaim? Why is it important for writers to recognize counterclaims in their arguments? A counterclaim is the opposing viewpoint – the “other side” of the argument Recognizing counterclaims adds to a writer’s credibility (ethos) – shows the writer is knowledgeable about all sides of the issue he/she is writing about

Writers must state the “other side” to be effective and credible (believable) When writing, the writer states the counterclaim and argues against it – stating why the opposing view is weak or wrong Yes, it’s true that ______________ exists, but ________________. Yes, it’s true that I will be out by myself and danger exists, but I have my cell phone to text and call you at any time. Yes, it true that the concert is expensive, but I have my own job to pay for my ticket. Yes, it’s true that there is inappropriate behavior at some concerts, but there will be a lot of police and extra security at the concert I am attending.

Practice Scenario, pg. 159 Issue: Mobile devices Claim: Mobile devices should be banned at school (not allowed in any way). Discuss your arguments for the ban and write one new idea on your paper after your discussion with your partner. Next, each person choose a side. One person say a claim, and the partner say the counterclaim.

Student’s Argument Principal’s Argument NEEDED FOR SAFETY REASONS – EMERGENCIES RESEARCH – EDUCATIONAL REASONS USE IN FREE TIME WHEN WORK ALL FINISHED NEED TO SUPPLEMENT SCHOOL DEVICES BECAUSE SCHOOL DOESN’T HAVE ENOUGH LISTEN TO MUSIC TO HELP STAY ON TASK STUDENT SHOULD HAVE FREEDOM TO BRING DEVICE SINCE THEY OWN IT Principal’s Argument TAKE AWAY PHONE IN CLASS USE FOR CHEATING CAN GET BROKEN ALREADY HAVE IPADS & COMPUTERS – PROVIDED DISTRACTION FROM INSTRUCTION SOCIAL MEDIA DISTRACTION & ILLEGAL ACTIONS
