RELATIVE SENTENCES FUNCTION AS ADJECTIVES THERE ARE TWO TYPES DEFINING NON- DEFINING

RELATIVE CLAUSES Define the noun that is before Give extra information about someone or something They are necessary to understand/ define the noun They usually go after the noun they describe

Lets see an example: The man didnt give me his name MAIN SENTENCE WHICH MAN ? WHO CAME YESTERDAY RELATIVE CLAUSE It identifies or defines the man: The one who came and not the one who phoned SO…

… from two simple sentences: 1.The man didnt give me his name. 2.The man came yesterday. The man who came yesterday didnt give me his name Common element By replacing one of the elements by a RELATIVE PRONOUN we make a complex sentence:

RELATIVE PRONOUNS: SUBJECTOBJECT POSSESSIVE PERSON WHO THAT WHO THAT WHOSE THING WHICH THAT WHICH THAT WHOSE PLACEWHERE Defining clauses:

EXAMPLES: 1.The girl is very friendly.2. The girl works in the shop. The girl works in the shop is very friendly verb subject Who that It cant be omitted 1. The girl is very friendly. 2. I was talking to that girl. The girl I was talking to is very friendlyWho that It can be omitted

NON-DEFINING RELATIVE CLAUSES Give extra information about someone or something They are NOT necessary to understand the noun They go between commas The relative pronoun CAN NEVER be omitted.

Lets see an example: Barbara has gone on holidays MAIN CLAUSE, who is my best friend, RELATIVE CLAUSE ? We dont need more definition. We know Barbara It gives extra information but It is not necessary to understand the main information.

… from two simple sentences: 1.Barbara has gone on holidays. 2.Barbara is my best friend. Barbara, who is my best friend, has gone on holidays Common element By replacing one of the elements by a RELATIVE PRONOUN we make a complex sentence:

RELATIVE PRONOUNS: SUBJECTOBJECT POSSESSIVE PERSON WHO WHOSE THING WHICH WHOSE PLACEWHERE Non-defining clauses:

EXAMPLES: 1.My parents are retired.2. My parents come to Spain every year. My parents, are retired, come to Spain every year. verb subject who It is not omitted 1. My parents are retired. 2. You saw them in the photo. My parents, you saw in the photo, are retired.who It IS NOT omitted
