Kasabian

aesthetics The poster sticks to a black and white colour scheme which is conventional of the rock genre and it represents the melancholic and eerie rock music they create. Furthermore the image connotes mystery with half of the face hidden, we can assume its trying to represent only some of their well known songs are being shown, and behind the surface there will be many new songs yet to be released, this is supported in the text at the bottom of the poster where it lists some of their big songs. The black of the background contrasts directly with the white type and imagery in the poster making the band name stand out. The notch out of the ‘Kasabian’ shows that the character is more important than the album name. This is generally unconventional but suits the rebellious nature of the album. On this poster the text is clear through the use of large bold fonts, especially the title ‘Kasabian’, it catches the audiences eyes. In addition to this the white text on the black background is incredibly simple and is a reoccurring theme in the rock genre digipaks.

Advertisement The black and white art is also done to create consistency and synergy between merchandise and other albums, so that the merchandise looks similar to the album cover and stands out more that other band merchandise. The artwork of this advertisement is similar to the artwork of the digipak itself. The simplicity of this poster allows the viewer to quickly obtain all the key information required about the release of the album. By including the website at the top of the advertisement it makes it easy for the viewer to find further information. In an attempt to attract the audience they have listed their most popular songs giving a name to songs that viewers may have heard, which increases the likelihood of a viewer purchasing the album. This also attracts a more mass audience and is a common convention for advertisement of this nature.

Conclusion This album poster is simple but strong, it only includes what it needs to and uses a basic but good looking design that is easy to use on merchandise. This poster has shown me that effective digipacks are simple and eye catching, not complicated and packed with information. The link to the website means the poster can spend more space on other things like the person or the information on the hits. When designing my digipack poster I will look at this one for guidance and think hard about what information is important enough to get on the poster and what would be more suited to be on a band website. Furthermore I will try to use a design that can be used in different form, which will help with cross-referencing for the album cover and would make merchandising easier.
