PhD-status for Magne Syrstad PhD-seminar for software engineering group. November 23rd 2004

Outline Two case studies Overall plans for next 6 months 3 questions Good start to planning, but a lot remains AKVAsmart DNV Overall plans for next 6 months 3 questions

AKVAsmart Establishment of a product family to support fish farming industry Replacing old project First project finished, the main one underway But a plan project starting outside of the common platform Possible focus: Adoption Architecture and variability mechanisms

DNV Software They have a common platform called BRIX Domain independent, little functionality From the Nauticus line of products Being established as platform for all products within DNV software Two possible cases AIMS – Asset integration management system Making domain specific, shared components RMS – Risk management system Making an extended platform as well as domain components.

DNV Software Focus is still in the air Scoping of reusable components? BRIX AIMS RMS Focus is still in the air Scoping of reusable components? Adoption strategies Overall benefits? Time to market, economy... Will have to agree on something with DNV Software

Plan for the next 6 months Get case studies going and obtain results Organize local arrangements for changeability experiment with Simula. Organize exercises in software architecture course Take research methods course to complete classes Present something at internal PhD-conference in May/June to finish IT-emner

Questions How wide is it wise to make a study ? The wider the more publishing opportunities, but the narrower the better result? One thing is getting a study started, but how to make it going, keeping the company interested? Does anyone know other companies with large company wide frameworks/families that are neither in the Familier project, nor Kantega?
