Prokaryote vs Eukaryote Cells

Cells have evolved two different types: Prokaryotes Eukaryotes

Prokaryote cells are smaller and simpler Commonly known as bacteria 10-100 microns or micrometers in size Single-celled(unicellular) Filamentous (strings of single cells)

These are prokaryote E. coli bacteria on the head of a steel pin.

Prokaryote cells are simply built (example: E. coli) capsule: slimy outer coating cell wall: tougher middle layer cell membrane: delicate inner skin

Prokaryote lifestyle unicellular: all alone colony: forms a film filamentous: forms a chain of cells

Prokaryote Feeding Photosynthetic: energy from sunlight Disease-causing: feed on living things Decomposers: feed on dead things

Eukaryotes are bigger and more complicated Have organelles Have chromosomes can be multicellular include animal and plant cells

Prokaryotes vs. Eukaryotes All living things are classified into two major groups. They are either Prokaryotes or Eukaryotes. Prokaryotes Eukaryotes No definite nucleus No membrane bound organelles All are bacteria! Unicellular Have a defined nucleus have membrane-bound organelles (mitochondria, lysosomes, etc.) May be single or multi-cellular Now think of what Prokaryotes and Eukaryotes have in common and use them to complete the following bubble map. Remember the characteristics of all living things!!
