Introductory Academic Advising Group Session LEGO Serious Play Introductory Academic Advising Group Session AA - LEGO Serious Play November 2018 / Sue Beckingham
Play Packs This is a session that can be used in an early semester one group Academic Advising session. The idea is for students to use the Lego Serious Play packs to answer to a series of questions related to barriers or obstacles students might face as Freshers. https://www.lego.com/en-us/seriousplay/material
Sessions Sessions can vary in time and so complexity. For this example the session was 50 minutes long and students were asked to consider why they chose Hallam as well as what obstacles they or their peers might have faced since starting at Hallam. Individually each student then builds a model in response to the given question; they then have the opportunity to share their model in turn. This example was built by a student navigating the start of year.
Next steps Depending on the time and number of students and/or questions you utilise within the session, you can discuss possible avenues for support either within the session or follow up with individual students outside the session. Take a look at the infographic which provides details of barriers/obstacles faced by students and signposts to further support or information.
