Strand 2 Global citizenship PPT 09: Poverty

What is poverty? Poverty is a word used to describe people in society who cannot afford the essentials that are needed for a basic standard of living. Some people in Ireland and in most parts of the world live in poverty. What is the message in the photographs above?

The world: rich north and poor south A basic way of understanding the global poverty/development divide was devised by Willy Brandt, in 1980, as shown in this map. The development divide: the north–south divide based upon the Brandt Line Are there any poor countries in the north? What about rich countries in the south?

The Human Development Index (HDI) The HDI is used to measure all aspects of human development. Top 10 very high human development countries Bottom 10 low human development countries Rank Country 1 Norway 179 Mali 2 Australia 180 Mozambique 3 Switzerland 181 Sierra Leone 4 Denmark 182 Guinea 5 Netherlands 183 Burkina Faso 6 Germany 184 Burundi Ireland 185 Chad 8 United States 186 Eritrea 9 Canada 187 Central African Republic New Zealand 188 Niger Are you surprised by what you see? Why/why not?

Poverty today in Ireland – a case study Over 1,000 homeless families, that’s over 2,500 children, live in hotels and bed and breakfasts! Karen’s story Karen lives in a hotel room with her two sons, aged six and 10. There are two beds (one single and one double). There is a small fridge in the corner and a kettle and a toaster on the floor beside it. There is nowhere to cook dinner and only a petrol station and a takeaway within walking distance. Breakfast in the hotel is too much hassle with too many questions from other guests, such as ‘Why do you live here?’ Living in a hotel is not all it is cracked up to be when you are not on holidays!

The poverty cycle People who are poor often get caught in a poverty trap or poverty cycle, which can be very difficult to escape. 1) What can the Irish government do to help? 2) What can organisations do to help? Name some organisations that have been set up to help poor people.

Overcoming poverty It all comes back to basic needs and human rights! How do each of these help to overcome poverty? Basic needs Education Technology Jobs
