Canada’s Government Canada’s federal government is lead by a Prime Minister. The Prime Minister oversees the Parliament. Justin Trudeau, the 23rd Prime Minister of Canada

The Parliament is made up of two branches. The House of Commons – members are elected The Senate – members are appointed by the Prime Minister

There are 10 provincial governments There are 10 provincial governments. (Similar to state governments in the USA.) Provincial governments are lead by a premier.

Canada’s Regions Regionalism Physical geography is a major factor in Canada’s regions. Regionalism English in the main language in Canada. French is spoken in Quebec. Regionalism refers to the strong connection people feel toward the region in which they live. Sometimes people have a stronger connection to their region, than their county.

The Eastern Provinces The Eastern Provinces are on the Atlantic coast of Canada. The Maritime Provinces = New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island Maritime means on or near the sea. Newfoundland and Labrador are also part of the Eastern Provinces. Eastern Provinces have: A short growing season. An economy based on forestry (cutting down and replanting trees) and fishing. The Heartland The Heartland = Quebec and Ontario More than ½ of all Canadians live in these two provinces. Quebec The capital of Quebec is Quebec Montreal is the second largest city in Canada Quebecois: citizens of Quebec who believe Quebec should be given a special status, or become an independent country. Ontario The capital of Ontario is Toronto Toronto is a major center for industry, finance, education, and culture. Residents come from many different parts of the world. The national capital of Canada is Ottawa

The Western Provinces The Prairie Provinces = Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta. The Canadian North The Canadian North = the Yukon Territory, the Northwest Territory, and Nunavut. This region is extremely cold. Nunavut is a new territory created for the Inuit people who live there. Nunavut means “Our land.” The physical geography of the area includes forests and tundra. During winter, sunlight is limited to a few hours in some areas.

Canada’s Economy Industries Trade Canada is one of the worlds leading mineral producer. Minerals include: Titanium Zinc Iron Ore Gold Coal They main industries in Canada are service related, like tourism. Trade Canada’s leading trade partner is the United States.
