Failure of the League of Nations The League fails to keep World Peace

Japan 1931 Japan is hit badly by economic depression. People lose faith in the gov’t, look to the army for help. The Army invades Manchuria (in China).

What does the L.O.N. do……?! It tells Japan not to do it. After Japan does it, they tell countries not to trade with Japan. Many world countries are poor and need Japan to trade with. Countries continue to trade with Japan.

What is that about…..?! The L.O.N. condemned Japan for its actions. In response, Japan decided to leave the L.O.N.

Here it is

Japan’s like…

Hitler’s rise to power January 1933 he becomes Chancellor (President) of Germany. He immediately begins to build up an army. 1936 Hitler orders army to invade Rhineland

The Rhineland

Hitler’s alliances In 1936 he makes alliances with Japan and Italy.

Hitler takes back Austria In 1938 Hitler takes back Austria, which it had lost in the Treaty of Versailles.

Britain and France Britain and France do not like this. Germany is violating the Treaty of Versailles.

Hitler’s response Hitler says, “hey, chill out, that’s it, I’m done taking over countries, scout’s honor!”

Britain and France Britain and France are like “Well, alright. He says he’s not going to do it, Hitler is a trustworthy citizen, we believe Hitler is not going to do it.”

But…… France and Britain are scared of another war. They begin practicing “appeasement.” Appeasement is letting an aggressive nation take over some countries, as long as they promise not to take over the world.

Hitler doesn’t keep his word Six Months, SIX MONTHS!, after saying he was done invading, he’s at it again. He invades Czechoslovakia.

Britain and France Britain and France are now scared They see that Hitler is not a man of his word They fear War will be inevitable

Hitler’s like….. Hitler realizes by now that France and Britain do not want to mess with him

Hitler makes another alliance In early 1939, Hitler makes an alliance with the Soviet Union.

And then……. He invades Poland

Germans invading Poland

Britain and France Finally they declare war on Germany But they really don’t want to. They do not want to fight another World War. But they can no longer stand by and let Hitler take over Europe. Plus, they had promised Poland they would help if Poland was invaded.

Why did the L.O.N. fail? It had no army to enforce anything. Many countries did not belong to it. (including us) It only met 4 times a year Those are 3 essential reasons.

Response Define Social Darwinism Explain how Social Darwinism played a role in “The Scramble For Africa.”
