Vascular Tissue

Three Kinds of Tissue Dermal Vascular Ground

Dermal Tissue Outer covering Also called epidermal Protects the plant from the environment Cuticle – waxy layer that prevents water loss Root Hairs – increase surface area for absorption of water and minerals from soil

Vascular Tissue Transports water and nutrients Includes the xylem & phloem Xylem – transports water Phloem – transports sugars Vascular cambium – growth increases by mitosis and can be seen in tree rings

Ground Tissue Makes up the bulk of the plant Produces and stores food Provides support for the roots and stems Is packed with chloroplasts in leaves
