Homework How much homework should your child have? math, reading, writing, spelling, grammar, science, and social science. Weekly spelling and vocabulary contracts Reading nightly and over weekends to ensure comprehension skills develop. Students should not have a lot of homework unless they did not use time wisely in class!

Mathematics Math is taught using groups that are designed with ability, work ethic, and responsibility in mind. Groups are dynamic in nature and can change. The purpose of math groups is to give your child math instruction that meets their needs and will help them master the skills. Critical math concepts that will contribute to mastering sixth grade standards are: Multiplication Division Place value (billions to ten-thousandths) Operations with decimals Knowledge of fractions Geometric skills such as area, volume, and complex area

Reading and Accelerated Reader English language Arts will consist of the following materials: Science expository text 12-14 classroom novels Social Studies expository text Poetry, plays, and myths Accelerated Reader is critical for all students AR STAR expectations AR points are not part of a grade but are a personal goal they should meet and are a Soaring Falcon requirement! AR comprehension tests from classroom novels are inserted in the grade book.

Writing, Spelling, and Grammar Writing assignments Weekly summaries and small assignments will occur A minimum of six major writing assignments will also occur for the year Using the writing process and six traits of writing The length will be 4-8 paragraphs each Spelling words Are not the words in their practice books. Words are selected based on what we are learning in class and are across the curriculum. Grammar Concepts will be incorporated in writing assignments. Tests may consist of paragraphs and justifying proper use.

Science and Social Studies Science will be taught five days a week Many projects will be done throughout the year. All projects are started in class and if time is used wisely, may be finished in class. Social studies will be integrated in the reading block on a daily basis. Many projects will be done throughout the year along with a major take home project towards the end of the year. Just like science all projects are started in class. Students should not have a lot of project homework unless they are not using their class time wisely.

Teacher-Parent Communicaton A weekly record along with a yellow folder containing previous week’s work will be sent home on Mondays. This is to help keep you informed of your child’s progress in class and needs to be returned signed, on Tuesdays. Newsletters will also be sent home on Monday and will be posted on our class page and the student’s Google Classroom.

Discipline and My Expectations I expect every student to be on task at all times in class I will not allow any child to disrupt your child’s education Any disruption will be dealt with in the following steps in class. Verbal warning Name on board Check next to name, child calls home and asks for a consequence at home, and RC Second check denote an additional day RC, campus clean up, teacher calls home, and possible behavior contract with a parent meeting. Third check, child is sent to the office, student calls parent, Central Unified Elementary Discipline Contract is enforced, and teacher-parent-student meeting. If a student calls home, I will not be able to discuss the situation during class time.
