Energy Flow Through Organisms November 13, 2017

Objective SWBAT: summarize how energy flows through organisms.

Connection On Thursday and Friday we talked about how photosynthesis and respiration are important cellular processes that rely on each other to do their jobs. Today we are going to continue to talk about these processes and how they allow energy to flow through organisms.

Summarizing A summary is a shortened version of a text that highlights its key points. Summarizing is an important skill in all subject areas, and especially in science. When you are reading in science and seeing lots of scientific terms that are difficult to understand and there is a lot of new information, it is important to be able to know what is crucial information and what is not. From there, you can simplify what you are reading into a summary that is easier to understand.

Summarizing Let’s read the first section of the packet together, and we will write a one sentence summary of that section. Reflect (Page 1): Paragraphs 1–3 Now you read the rest of the document and summarize the following sections on your worksheet. Look out! (Page 1): Paragraph 1 Reflect (Page 2): Paragraphs 1–4 Reflect (Page 3): Paragraph 1 Reflect (Page 3): Paragraph 2

Sharing Summaries Volunteers to share their summaries? Look out! (Page 1): Paragraph 1 Reflect (Page 2): Paragraphs 1–4 Reflect (Page 3): Paragraph 1 Reflect (Page 3): Paragraph 2

Comic Strips – Exit Ticket In a six-panel comic, describe how energy flows through organisms. Be sure to have illustrations as well as dialogue in each panel. If you don’t know where to start, think about the matching game that we played on Thursday. Where does energy for our planet come from? Then what happens? Then what happens….? …and so on.

Homework Finish your comic strips if you did not finish in class
