What is the metric system? System of measurement used by scientists around the world
Who’s Using the System?
Who uses the metric system? Scientists around the world and the scientific community. WHY?
Scientist accomplish… Scientists can use this system to : Express observations more precisely Communicate information easily
The Metric System SI is an abbreviation for international system of units.
The system is based on unit of TEN. Each unit is ten times larger or smaller than the previous unit.
You can change the prefix of a unit to increase or decrease its size. SYMBOL MEANING Kilo - k One thousand (1,000) Hecto - h One hundred (100) Deka - da Ten (10) Deci - d One tenth (1/10) Centi - c One hundredth (1/100) Milli- m One thousandth (1/1000)
You can convert between SI units like you can between dollars and dimes. Units of Length km = 1,000 m 1 m = 100 cm 1 m = 1,000 mm 1 cm = 10 mm
Comparing and Contrasting Gram Meter Liter Definition Base Unit What it Measures Example Complete Graphic Organizer With Your Group
Gram Units of Measurement Definition: Used to measure mass or amount of matter in an object Base Unit: g What is Measures? Mass Example: Weight of a pumpkin
Meter Units of Measurement Definition: Used to measure length or distance between two points Base Unit: m What is Measures? Length Example: Distance between New York and Chicago
Liter Units of Measurement Definition: Used to measure volume of a liquid or the amount of space it takes up Base Unit: L (Must be capitalized) What is Measures? Volume Example: Amount of soda
Metric system is not used in U.S. So, there will never be anything labeled in… MILES FEET INCHES FAHRENHEIT
Balance measures weight What does is measures? Balance measures weight
_______ + ______ + _______ = ________ g Measuring Mass We will be using triple-beam balances to find the mass of various objects. The objects are placed on the scale and then you move the weights on the beams until you get the lines on the right-side of the scale to match up. Once you have balanced the scale, you add up the amounts on each beam to find the total mass. What would be the mass of the object measured in the picture? _______ + ______ + _______ = ________ g Top Image: http://www.southwestscales.com/Ohaus_Triple_Beam_750-SO.jpg Bottom Image: http://www.regentsprep.org/Regents/biology/units/laboratory/graphics/triplebeambalance.jpg
Measuring Mass – Triple-Beam Balance 1st – Place the film canister on the scale. 2nd – Slide the large weight to the right until the arm drops below the line. Move the rider back one groove. Make sure it “locks” into place. 3rd – Repeat this process with the top weight. When the arm moves below the line, back it up one groove. 4th – Slide the small weight on the front beam until the lines match up. 5th – Add the amounts on each beam to find the total mass to the nearest tenth of a gram. Graduated cylinder measures volume What does is measures? Graduated cylinder measures volume
Measuring Volume We will be using graduated cylinders to find the volume of liquids and other objects. Read the measurement based on the bottom of the meniscus or curve. When using a real cylinder, make sure you are eye-level with the level of the water. What is the volume of water in the cylinder? _____mL What causes the meniscus? A concave meniscus occurs when the molecules of the liquid attract those of the container. The glass attracts the water on the sides. Measuring Solid Volume 10 cm 9 cm 8 cm We can measure the volume of regular object using the formula length x width x height. _____ X _____ X _____ = _____ http://resources.edb.gov.hk/~s1sci/R_S1Science/sp/en/syllabus/unit14/new/testingmain1.htm We can measure the volume of irregular object using water displacement. Amount of H2O with object = ______ About of H2O without object = ______ Difference = Volume = ______ Click here for an online activity about volume. Choose Lessons Volume & Displacement
Meter stick and rulers measures length What does is measures? Meter stick and rulers measures length
Measuring Length How many millimeters are in 1 centimeter? 1 centimeter = 10 millimeters How many millimeters are in 1 centimeter? What is the length of the line in centimeters? _______cm What is the length of the line in millimeters? _______mm What is the length of the line to the nearest centimeter? ________cm HINT: Round to the nearest centimeter – no decimals. Area vs Volume Area = length x width Length is the Long side 98 cm2
Volume= length x width x height Area vs Volume Volume= length x width x height
Measuring Temperature You measure temperature in degrees Celsius You use a thermometer Find temperature by counting the marked lines
