Do You Not Fear God? Luke 23:39-43

“But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people.” (2 Timothy 3:1–5, ESV)

“But the other rebuked him, saying, “Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation?” (Luke 23:40, ESV)

Do you fear God?

The Fear of The LORD Is The Beginning of Knowledge Do You Not Fear God? Luke 23:39-43

Exodus 15:11

Fear “can describe terror or dread (Gen 3:10), the OT use of ‘fear’ often indicates awe or reverence.” Custis, M. (2012, 2016). Fearing God in the Old Testament. In Faithlife Study Bible. Bellingham, WA: Lexham Press.

Proverbs 1:7 “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.” (Proverbs 9:10, ESV) “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; all those who practice it have a good understanding. His praise endures forever!” (Psalm 111:10, ESV)

“The beginning of wisdom is found in the temper of reverence and awe “The beginning of wisdom is found in the temper of reverence and awe. The fear of the finite in the presence of the Infinite, of the sinful in the presence of the Holy… this for the Israelite was the starting-point of all true wisdom” – Albert Barnes Barnes, A. (n.d.). Bible Hub Proverbs 1:7 Commentaries. Retrieved November 06, 2017, from http://bit.ly/2hf8nua

John 5:39 “Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.” (John 17:17, ESV)

Acts 17:27 ““Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.” (Matthew 5:6, ESV) ““Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.” (Matthew 7:7–8, ESV) “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.” (2 Timothy 2:15, ESV)

Do you fear God? “Now these Jews were more noble than those in Thessalonica; they received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so.” (Acts 17:11, ESV) “Because they hated knowledge and did not choose the fear of the Lord,” (Proverbs 1:29, ESV)

The Fear of The LORD Is A Fountain of Life Do You Not Fear God? Luke 23:39-43

Genesis 22:12 “that you may fear the Lord your God, you and your son and your son’s son, by keeping all his statutes and his commandments, which I command you, all the days of your life, and that your days may be long.” (Deuteronomy 6:2, ESV) ““You shall stand up before the gray head and honor the face of an old man, and you shall fear your God: I am the Lord.” (Leviticus 19:32, ESV) “You shall not wrong one another, but you shall fear your God, for I am the Lord your God.” (Leviticus 25:17, ESV)

Proverbs 14:26-27

John 6:27-29

Do you fear God? “You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me, yet you refuse to come to me that you may have life.” (John 5:39–40, ESV) “And with many other words he bore witness and continued to exhort them, saying, “Save yourselves from this crooked generation.”” (Acts 2:40, ESV) “Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling,” (Philippians 2:12, ESV)

The Fear of The LORD Is To Hate Evil Do You Not Fear God? Luke 23:39-43

Proverbs 8:13 ““Now therefore fear the Lord and serve him in sincerity and in faithfulness. Put away the gods that your fathers served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord. And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”” (Joshua 24:14–15, ESV) “The Lord made a covenant with them and commanded them, “You shall not fear other gods or bow yourselves to them or serve them or sacrifice to them, but you shall fear the Lord, who brought you out of the land of Egypt with great power and with an outstretched arm. You shall bow yourselves to him, and to him you shall sacrifice. And the statutes and the rules and the law and the commandment that he wrote for you, you shall always be careful to do. You shall not fear other gods, and you shall not forget the covenant that I have made with you. You shall not fear other gods, but you shall fear the Lord your God, and he will deliver you out of the hand of all your enemies.”” (2 Kings 17:35–39, ESV)

John 4:34 “And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” (Matthew 22:37–39, ESV)

James 1:13 “You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness; therefore God, your God, has anointed you with the oil of gladness beyond your companions.”” (Hebrews 1:9, ESV)

Hebrews 5:14

Do you fear God? “But God’s firm foundation stands, bearing this seal: “The Lord knows those who are his,” and, “Let everyone who names the name of the Lord depart from iniquity.”” (2 Timothy 2:19, ESV)

“To fear God is to express loyalty to Him and faithfulness to His covenant. Those who fear God exhibit trust in Him and obedience to His commandments. According to the OT, those who fear God obtain God’s protection, wisdom, and blessing.” Custis, M. (2012, 2016). Fearing God in the Old Testament. In Faithlife Study Bible.
