Middle School STEAM

What is STEAM? Students learn to solve real world problems using the engineering design process Students begin to learn how to apply soft skills and the 4 C’s of 21st century learning that are in demand for all industries

identified by industry leaders* Top 20 soft skill identified by industry leaders* What is STEAM? Oral & Written Communication High Energy Integrity Coaching/Coachable Detail Oriented Work Independently Teamwork Time Management Customer Service Oriented Customer Satisfaction Creativity Troubleshooting Microsoft Office Leadership Skills Self-starting/ Motivated Analytical Skills Organization Work Ethics Problem Solving Management Skills Students will learn how to apply the soft skills and 4 C's of 21st century learning. 4 C’s of 21st Century Learning Communication Collaboration Critical Thinking Creativity Discuss the interaction and discourse with the Raytheon engineer and her views on the 4 C’s. *Data from Texas Workforce Commission

Our goal in STEAM is to ultimately shift the mindset of the students from a traditional classroom, where students are presented with activities and given the materials/constraints that result in 100% success rate. In STEAM, our success is independent of the performance of the task. Instead, we are training our students to expect success while knowing that persevering through failure is the means which to achieve success.

This is a class for ALL students and all ability levels. Teachers are there to help ALL students succeed in STEAM.

Define The Problem Lockheed Martin has recruited you to design the next lighter than air emergency transportation vehicle for first responders such as firefighters police officers, medics in the military or search and rescue teams . The vehicle has to carry at least 5 people and use existing city structures to dock. In order for Lockheed to accept your design the vehicle has to be controllable, ascend quickly, and be able to be transported easily to an emergency or disaster site.

Research History of LTA Timeline and Presentation Science - Buoyancy, Density, Archimedes’ Principle, Convection Currents Math - Density, Volume, Mass (properties of matter and physical change due to heat)

Brainstorm Designs Use Art (technical drawings) and research to come up with possible solutions Example 1 Example 2

Choose A Solution How do students choose a solution? Sometimes, students have a specific collaborative session where the rules are less structured. Sometimes they use a very structured decision matrix.

Specific Collaborative Questionnaire

Decision Matrix

Build a Prototype What size should you choose? Did you have to modify a design?

Test and Improve Data, Perseverance (relate to other projects - i.e. high school door stop magnet) Why did some work better than others? Use evidence to support your answer How will you improve/modify your original design? How well did your new design work?

After Improvements

Accommodations & Intervention This is a class for ALL students and all ability levels. Teachers are there to help ALL students succeed in STEAM. Accommodations are available for all students Cowriter Voice to Text Small group instruction Chunking projects into smaller sections at a time Eagle Time (when available) Before/After school tutoring on most days
