Moments

What happened here?

A force is applied about a pivot causing a turning effect. What is a moment? A force is applied about a pivot causing a turning effect.

What do Levers Do? They allow us to apply a small force, but get a BIG TURNING EFFECT – this turning effect is called a MOMENT

Moment = Force x Perpendicular distance from pivot. Increasing moments Moment = Force x Perpendicular distance from pivot.

Moment = Force x Perpendicular distance from pivot. Calculating Moments Moment = Force x Perpendicular distance from pivot. A spanner of length 0.25m is used to turn a nut with a force of 40N. Calculate the moment. If the spanner above is replaced with one of length 0.2m, what force is now required to create the same turning effect?

Moments

Always, sometimes, never? The moment of a force is equal to the force multiplied by the distance from the pivot. The moment of a force is equal to the weight. The moment of a force is equal to the force multiplied by the perpendicular distance between the line of action of the force and the pivot. The anticlockwise moments will equal the clockwise moments. If the anticlockwise moments are greater than the clockwise moments the body will spin. For a beam with no weights acting on it, the pivot should be in the centre of the beam for it to balance. There will be a moment due to the weight of the beam if the beam’s centre of mass rests on the pivot.
