The Results of the Carlsbad Decrees Germany 1815- 1862

Post-Carlsbad Extensive Repression- from Metternich’s view very successful- all states became very repressive, even the more liberal southern states Professors, army reformers were fired and sent into exile 1820’s was a time of little nationalist evidence

1830’s 1820’s is peaceful from a reactionary perspective- 1830’s is very active from a nationalist perspective 1830 Revolution in France against Charles X- the spill over into Germany resulted in only minor localized revolts “Germany was snoring”- Heinrich Heine

1830’s Only significant repercussions came in southern Germany Hesse, Brunswick and Saxony- new constitutions Bavaria, Baden and Wurtemberg- extensions to their previous constitutions Not nationalist in nature- similar to Italy- localized discontent, liberal in nature

1830’s May 1832- Hambach Festival- 30,000 people- German Patriotic Association for the Support of the Free Press April 1833- Young Germany- armed German students, with Polish emigres attempted to enter the Diet at Frankfurt 1834- Six Articles- amended Carlsbad Decrees to be more repressive- all political meetings were illegal, wearing red, black and gold was illegal, Brothers Grimm were fired from their positions The Diet was seen as Austrian repression supported by Prussia- little hope for Liberals
