Immunohistochemical staining for phosphorylated ERK (pERK), a downstream effector of the RAS pathway, is increased in nevus sebaceus compared with adjacent normal skin. Staining for p16 is homogenously negative. Lower row: an early focus of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) arising within a nevus sebaceus.
