What is Heraldry? Heraldry is a way of identifying a family or individual. Originally it is thought to have been a way of identifying a medieval knight on a battle field. Covered in armour a knight’s shield would carry a crest or symbol to identify them. Heraldry includes various symbols, colours and patterns that have a meaning which is special to a family or individual. Here is a rough guide to some common ones:

Meanings Gold - generosity Silver - peace Red - brave and strong Blue -truth and loyalty Green -hope, joy, and love Black -constancy or grief Lion/ leopard- courage Unicorn- purity Bear - strength, cunning, Lamb- gentleness Wings- swiftness Lizard/Serpent- wisdom Dove- loyalty, peace Heart- charity Sun - glory Now make your own!
