EQ:What significant factors affected the development of Georgia? PT: Why did the capital of Georgia move from Savannah to Augusta? What was ceded Indian territory used for?

Railroads Come to Georgia More efficient way to travel. 1833, Georgia Railroad Company builds railroad westward from Augusta to Madison, Eatonton and Athens. Central railroad extended from Savannah to Macon. Towns grow around railways.

Government and Town Planning After GA became a state, towns sprang up at crossroads, ferry landings, railroad stops, or other places people gathered to trade. Ceded Indian territory was reserved for towns with laid out streets, lots for pubic buildings and town lots sold to settlers. From 1803-1828, Creeks give up land and government plans three cities for development.

Milledgeville served as state capital, Macon and Columbus formed along the Fall Line. All became major centers for trade. State government planning contributed to Georgia’s economic prosperity in the early 1800’s.
