The Civil War

Lincoln’s goal was to preserve the Union He took bold executive action to achieve this aim He increased the size of the Navy, ordered a naval blockade of the South….

Battle of Gettysburg (July 1-3, 1863) First time Lee ventures north (Pennsylvania) in hopes to end the war. South was looking for shoes and supplies for their army. The South attacks quickly, were unorganized and were defeated with heavy casualties.

Gettysburg Continued: Marks the high point of the war for the South as they will never again venture that far North. 53,000 Americans die over the course of three days fighting.

Sherman’s March to the Sea (1864-1865) Led a Union army of 100,000 men into Atlanta, Georgia. Army went on a march to the east coast leaving a 50 mile-wide path of destruction
