MINDJOG If you want to own a Chick Fila Franchise in the Greater Towson Area, what types of information would you research in order to pick the location of your restaurant?

GIS (Geographic Information System) A collection of computer hardware and software that permits spatial data to be collected, recorded, stored, retrieved, manipulated, analyzed, and displayed to the user

GIS Take the phenomena of various thematic maps and combine/layer that information into one “map” so to analyze the relationship amongst the data

GIS What type of person would want the GIS system to the right? Includes Topographic base Land Parceling Zoning Floodplains Wetlands Land Cover Soils

GIS Identify 5 layers that you would want in a GIS composite if you were involved in… (1) Development of new shopping center (2) Building a new highway (3) Regulating an oil pipeline (4) Baltimore City Police Commissioner (5) Owner of a DANCE CLUB!!!!!!!!!!!! (6) Looking for a teaching job

GPS According to Wikipedia (NOOOOO!!!!!) a space-based global navigation satellite system (GNSS) that provides location and time information in all weather, anywhere on or near the Earth, where there is an unobstructed line of sight to four or more GPS satellites. It is maintained by the United States government and is freely accessible by anyone with a GPS receiver with some technical limitations which are only removed for military users.

GPS According to the United States Air Force According to some British guy

GPS Watch the following video. Why don’t we just get rid of paper maps if we have GPS?

Think about your life!!!!! Identify an aspect of your life in which GIS and GPS could be used in your decision making. What layers would you want in your GIS? Why would GPS work as an advantage over regular maps?
