Biography Born June 28 1712 in Geneva, Switzerland Wrote his first major philosophical work in 1750 Died July 2 1778 in Ermenonville, France In 1725 he started working as an engraver Published the book “Du Contract Social, Principles Du Droit Politique” in 1762

He wrote and composed operas He also wrote the Social Contract Famous Work He wrote and composed operas In 1754 he wrote the Discourse on the Origin and Foundations of Inequality. Gave his opinion on the state of nature He also wrote the Social Contract Gives his opinion on the developments of society

Philosophy “Man was born free, and he is everywhere in chains” Freedom is the power to choose our own chains Meaning: Humans were born free in the state of nature, but since we judge each other it has taken away our freedom and put us in chains Meaning: We can choose whether on not to make fun of people or we can choose whether or not to listen to those making fun of us, by doing this we are choosing if we want to be free or not

Philosophy It is unnatural for a majority to rule, for a majority can seldom be organized and united for specific action, and a minority can Meaning: Using the majority isn't always the best because they can be wrong since they might be more unorganized while the minority has less people and is more organized Place video here

Ideas Today Beliefs That Impact Us Today A good government protects the rights of its people. Jean’s idea is still in effect by today when our citizens rally and stand up for their rights Rousseau encouraged us to not value the negative opinion of others. This belief still stands today with the LGBT community.

If you had to come up with your own philosophy what would it be about? Do you think to have your opinions stand out means to stand alone? Why or why not?
