Ephesians Class Schedule 1/28/18 Eph 1_7_9 R. Henderson

Praise to the Godhead 1:3-14 Praise to the Father for our position in Christ 1:3-6 for our spiritual blessing in Him for our being chosen in Him that we should be holy and blameless for being predestined us to adoption as sons for the kind intention of His will for the praise of the glory of His grace for grace which He freely bestowed on us in the Beloved Praise to the Son for our position in Him 1:7-12 Praise to the Spirit for His work in the believer 1:13-14

Praise to the Son for our position in Him 1:7-12 (part 1) 7  In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace 8  which He lavished on us. In all wisdom and insight 9  He made known to us the mystery of His will, according to His kind intention which He purposed in Him

in Him - lit: in our living union with Him (Christ) – see v:6 7  In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace in Him - lit: in our living union with Him (Christ) – see v:6 we have - we are continually having (main verb of v:7) note: it is “the redemption” – the particular one which God has provided through His son redemption - apolytrōsis - a releasing, for (i.e. on payment of) a ransom. Paul also uses it in Rom 3:24, 1 Cor 1:30 basic idea: a release from something on the basis of some action by another – Paul’s teaching is that redemption is the release from the penalty of sin based on Christ’s death . . . in a doctrinal context, it always implies a previous condition of slavery from which man could not extricate himself. McCalley

7  In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace through His blood through – dia - the preposition of intermediate agency Acts 20:28 . . . the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood. The out-poured blood of the Son of God at the Cross is the lutron, "the price for redeeming, the ransom," – McCalley We see this truth in the following verses: Titus 2:13-14 --- Christ Jesus, who gave Himself for us to redeem us from every lawless deed --- 1 Peter 1:18-19 --- redeem --- with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ

the forgiveness of our trespasses 7  In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace the forgiveness of our trespasses this phrase further explains what redemption is! forgiveness - The word "forgiveness" is aphesis from aphiēmi, "to send from one's self, to send away, to bid go away or depart." Eleven times it is followed by "of sins," and once by "of trespasses.” – Acts 10:43, Acts 13:38, Col 1:14 trespasses - paraptōma - primarily "a false step, a blunder" ; lit., "a fall beside," used ethically, denotes "a trespass," a deviation, from uprightness and truth, remember “sins” is the Greek word hamartia – to miss the mark!

according to the riches of His grace 7  In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace redemption and forgiveness are inseparably linked. (Matt. 26:28). This redemption is so deeply rooted in Christ that He not only is the provider of redemption but He Himself is our redemption (see I Cor 1:30). McCalley according to the riches of His grace Eph 2:7 so that in the ages to come He might show the surpassing riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. in v:1:7 . . . it is according to “the riches of His grace” in v:2:7 . . . it is to show “the surpassing riches of His grace”

7  In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace according to - kata – lit: according to a norm or standard The standard is “the riches of His grace” riches - ploutos - metaphorically of the riches of God or Christ, the rich gifts and blessings imparted by God or Christ see Eph. 3:8; Phil. 4:19 of His grace word of His grace – see Acts 14:3 & 20:32 glory of His grace – see Eph. 1:6

8  which He lavished on us. In all wisdom and insight 9  He made known to us the mystery of His will, according to His kind intention which He purposed in Him which – refers back to “the riches of His grace” in verse 7 so verse 8 could read either (in subject, verb, D.O. order)! He lavished the riches of His grace on us. or He lavished the riches of His grace on us in all wisdom and insight. lavished - perisseuō - it is used in the sense of "to make to abound," e.g., to provide a person richly so that he has "abundance,“ – see 2 Cor. 9:8 (Aorist, Indicative, Active)

8  which He lavished on us. In all wisdom and insight 9  He made known to us the mystery of His will, according to His kind intention which He purposed in Him In all wisdom and insight He made known to us the mystery of His will wisdom – sophia – knowledge that sees the heart of things; it sees things as they really are and not just on the surface – Col 1:9 & Col 2:2-3 insight – phronēsis – the kind of discernment that leads to right action - Luke 1:17 (--- attitude of the righteous) Therefore He has lavished us in Christ with the ability to see things as they are and walk in these truths

made known - lit: having made known – communicating 8  which He lavished on us. In all wisdom and insight 9  He made known to us the mystery of His will, according to His kind intention which He purposed in Him He made known to us made known - lit: having made known – communicating things before unknown - Eph 3:3, 6:19 the mystery of His will mystery - mystērion - a mystery is something that was concealed in the past but is now revealed of His will - is used as follows: the kind intention of His will – Eph 1:5 the counsel of His will – Eph 1:11 the knowledge of His will – Col 1:9 the exercise of His will – James 1:18 1/28/18 Eph 1_7_9 R. Henderson

8  which He lavished on us. In all wisdom and insight 9  He made known to us the mystery of His will, according to His kind intention which He purposed in Him according to His (the) kind intention [good pleasure] according to - kata – lit: according to a norm or standard His (the) kind intention kind intention – eudokía - in the sense of good pleasure, will, purpose, the idea of benevolence being included, spoken of God which He purposed in Him which refers back to “the kind intention” - so it would read! He purposed* the kind intention in Him * middle voice - lays stress upon the personal interest God had in so doing
