Motion Chapter 1 Notes

Section 1 Describing and Measuring Motion pages 6 - 15 Motion is a change in distance between objects. A reference point helps identify movement. If the distance between the object and a reference point, then motion has occurred. Example – the fly in the car

Measuring Distance Scientists use the Metric System to measure “stuff”. K H D U D C M The metric system is based on the power of 10, so the easiest way to convert numbers is by moving the decimal point!! Check the units by creating the fraction called a conversion factor Ex: 60 min = 1 hr 1 hr 60 min

Speed Speed is how far an object goes and how long it takes to get there. Speed = distance / time

Velocity Velocity is the EXACT same formula as speed!! Velocity includes direction!! V = d/t

Section 3 Acceleration pages 22 - 27 When measuring how fast an object moves from one place to another – you are measuring its acceleration. Mr. Herdman’s car travels from 0 to 60 in 5.3 seconds.

Acceleration In science, acceleration means an increasing speed OR decreasing speed OR a change in direction over time. A = vf – vi / time
