FRIEND TO FRIEND Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Shelter for Women

Apply social work ethical principles to guide professional practice Competency # 2 AKA (C2) Apply social work ethical principles to guide professional practice

Social Work Ethical Principles Social workers primary goal is to help people in need and to address social problems Social workers challenge social injustice Social workers respect the inherent dignity and worth of the person This ethical principle is enacted by listening and talking to hurting women in a non-judgmental way. Also by being a friend to them as well as being a professional. At Friend to Friend we are court advocates. We go to court with our clients. We help our clients fill out legal paperwork to initiate their separation from their abusers We are an agency that provides education. We promote growth and healing that leads to stronger self esteems We value and respect the women’s choices

Cont. Social workers recognize the central importance of human relationships Social workers behave in a trustworthy manner Social workers practice within their areas of competence and develop and enhance their professional expertise. It is important that at F2F that the women and children stay in harmony with one another. We do this by conducting group meetings to iron out the differences among the families as soon as they surface. F2F is a strictly confidential setting we are bound by confidentiality to keep the names and situations of our clients confidential At F2F everyone works in their practice of scope. We are not an agency that fixes the client like a therapist neither do we solve situations like the police. We provide a healing sanctuary for the clients to be safe and decide the directions they want to take

Practice Behaviors 2.1-Recognize and manage personal values in a way that allows professional values to guide practice Always, always have to examine yourself first. To ensure that you are not healing your pain through others situatiions

Behaviors Cont. 2.2-Make ethical decisions by applying standards of the NASW Code of Ethics That is the way to guide professional practices

Cont. 2.3- Tolerate ambiguity in resolving ethical conflicts *ambiguity-doubtfulness or uncertainty in meaning or intentions -In the helping profession your help or expertise is not always initially trusted but you have to tolerate and endure and if you continue to apply the ethical principles in your work you may win their trust. Which is needed to get the job done.

Cont. 2.4- Apply strategies of ethical reasoning to arrive at principled decisions *you have to make a decision to stay professional and not practice outside your area of concentration

C-2 Thank you
