Stakeholders role in natural resources management By: Dr. Yasir Yousif

Definition of Stakeholders Stakeholders in Natural resources management are (A person, group or organization that has interest or concern or involved in or may be affected by a change in the conditions governing the management and use of the resource .

A person such as an employee, customer, or citizen who is involved with an organization, society, etc. and therefore has responsibilities towards it and an interest in its success

Stakeholders can affect or be affected by the organization's actions, objectives and policies. Some examples of key stakeholders are, directors, employees, government (and its agencies), owners (shareholders), suppliers, unions, and the community from which the business draws its resources.

Community participation means Community participation means that people have the right and should participate in solving their problems, mobilize local resources, propose solutions and alternatives, and establish and maintain their local organizations.

Participation is the organized effort to increase control over resources and institutions organized in a given social situation

Stakeholders in NRM include Government agencies , the private sector, NGOs , CBOs , Academic institutions ,the media, intergovernmental bodies ,technical assistance agencies and donors.

Stakeholders found at many levels: Local: People live in or near the forest or the resource. National : Governmental agencies, private sector, Regional :Regional NGOs, regional international bodies International : Tourists, foreign companies , international NGOs, regional or international donors, and technical assistance agencies.

In order to preserve natural resources, we must: 1. Integrated economic planning. 2. Land management, including urban planning, taking the health and environmental conditions of securing living residential sites. 3. Preserve those resources and limit their exploitation beyond their capacity for renewal.

4. Adopting agricultural methods that take into account the local conditions and their capacity. 5. Integrating the environment into economic analysis ((Environmental impact assessment of projects)). 6. Use of environmental impact assessment in the infrastructure and construction industries
