Unit 2 Day 1 Layers of Earth and Density What really lies at the center of the Earth?!

Bell Ringer Science is fueled by ignorance. What does that mean? What layer of Earth are we standing on right now? If you dug down approximately 10 miles, could you really get to China? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XAxGccJNw0A

THINK What is geology? Study of Earth’s history Earth’s layers Earthquakes Volcanoes Rock Cycle Forces that Change Earth

Mapping Activity: The Ring of Fire Use your latitude/longitude skills to map the Ring of Fire! What do the locations on this map have in common?

Unit 2 Day 1 Notes: Layers of Earth and Plate Tectonics

Scientific Theory The best explanation scientists can come up with for why something happens Supported by lots of evidence! Theories can be supported or refuted over time.

Two Theories to Explain Why the Plates Move…

Continental Drift Theory Alfred Wegner Fossils from southern continents Coastline fit FAILED THEORY: He couldn’t explain WHY the plates move.

Theory of Plate Tectonics The lithosphere (crust + upper mantle) is broken into large plates that continuously move! Movement is caused by convection cycles.

Trench vs. Ridge Hot magma near the core rises towards the top of the mantle, cools, and sinks back down in a continuous cycle This movement shifts the tectonic plates!

Plate Tectonics Theory Newer, accepted theory Plates constantly move (at different speeds) Evidence: Earthquakes, volcanoes, mountains, trenches occur at plate boundaries

So, just how fast do those plates move? How fast do tectonic plates move? Ocean plate Land plate

Two layers make up tectonic plates: 1. CRUST 2. UPPER MANTLE What is the asthenosphere? What is the lithosphere?

Layers of the Earth: Video-Time! 1. What is our crust (the lightest layer) made of? 2. What is the lithosphere made of? 3. What is the THICKEST layer? 4. What is the asthenosphere like (compare it!) 5. What is the mantle made of? 6. What is the outer core made of mostly? 7. Which layer creates the Earth’s magnetic field? 8. What is the densest layer?!

Earth’s Layers Crust  Mantle  Outer Core  Inner Core What happens to temperature as you move from the crust to the core? Pressure? Density? Answer these questions as you fill out Earth’s layers!

Lithosphere = tectonic plates Asthenosphere = molten layer that plates sit on Fill in your chart using the worksheet!

Bell Ringer: You’re the Expert: Which layer of the Earth does each piece of the candy bar represent? 1. __________ 2. __________ 3. __________ 4. __________ Place a star beside the thickest layer. Place a rectangle at the two SOLID layers. Write HOT beside the hottest layer.

Bell Ringer: Identity Challenge Layer with Highest Pressure Densest Layer Layer made of pure iron and nickel, solid Layer we are standing on Which two tectonic plates are coming together to form the plate boundary above? Which type?!

Lithosphere = tectonic plates Asthenosphere = molten layer that plates sit on Fill in your chart using the worksheet!

Graham Lab: What did each item represent? Graham Cracker Whipped frosting Fruit roll-up?!

Density Demo Which is the most dense? The least dense? How are these liquids arranged?

Density Demo Make a hypothesis (prediction): Which layer of Earth is MOST dense?

Which is more dense: the crust or the core?

Rank the layers of Earth according to DENSITY (least-greatest). THINK: Which layers of Earth would float on water?

WebQuest http://rosemanearthsciencerhs.weebly.com Finish and turn in by the end of the class period!

EXIT TICKET 1. List the layers of Earth from the hottest to the coolest Thickest to thinnest Liquid layer(s) Densest to least dense 2. What is the name for the layer made of crust + upper mantle that comprises the tectonic plates? What is the name for the plastic-molten layer that the plates sit on? 3. Turn It In Bin: Test results for the Web Quest (each partner should complete separately).
