Reception – how we’ve changed!

Our focus today Number and BIG MATHS Writing – looking at progress and what you can do to help. General information

Numbers Early Learning Goal Children count reliably with numbers from one to 20, place them in order and say which number is one more or one less than a given number. Using quantities and objects, they add and subtract two single-digit numbers and count on or back to find the answer. They solve problems, including doubling, halving and sharing. 16 components for this Early Learning Goal – so it needs to be fun! Daily 15 minute maths sessions called BIG MATHS. Like phonics, it is active and engaging. Follow up activities linked to our learning focus.

It’s time for BIG MATHS! Get ready…here we go…

Let’s count from…. 7 11 15 9

What are these numbers? 6 16 4 19 5 13 20

How can you help? Practicing counting, anything, accurately. Look for numbers around you – number recognition is a key component of the Early Learning Goal. Practice ordering numbers, and questioning how they know. Solve practical problems together – how can we work it out?

Expected writing (by mid June) Early Learning Goal: Children use their phonic knowledge to write words in ways which match their spoken sounds. They also write some irregular common words. They write simple sentences which can be read by themselves and others. Some words are spelt correctly and others are phonetically plausible.

Our children’s progress From then…

…to now

Exceeding writing Exceeding statement Can spell phonically regular words of more than 1 syllable as well as many irregular but high frequency words. Uses the key features of narrative in own writing.

How can you help? Label and caption their drawings. Help you write a shopping list. Give them materials to write on or with – post its, little notebooks etc. Write a note for mummy or daddy. Writing cards – steer clear of copying. Make it a game! Get them to have a go!

General information Parent meetings – next half term, dates to follow. Water bottles - please make sure your child has one. Naming things/clothing. Attendance. Big Cat Books (changed on Monday), word cards to read (changed on Friday) – please try and ensure these are in book bags on these days. Ms Woodland (our inclusion manager) will be teaching every Wednesday, alternating between Kingfisher and Peacock class.
