Listening Why is listening more important today than it was 100 years ago? Printing press How much time do you spend listening? 45% of time listening 30% speaking What is the difference between hearing and listening? You may hear…perceive sound Listening is an active process How can good listening help you? Become a better listener, and you will hear better speeches Become a better listener, and you will become a better speaker

Listening How can the speaker help the listener? Analyze the audience Help the audience see how the subject will affect their lives Organize ideas clearly

Listening What are your duties as a listener? Get physically prepared for listening Be attentive Use the rate gap Average person talks 125-150 words per minute Average listener can handle at least 400 words per minute Rate gap should be filled actively Listen to understand Listen to remember Listen to evaluate Be distrustful of propaganda devices: name calling, glittering generalities, testimonial, card-stacking, half-truths, band wagon, plain folks

Assignment Purpose: Help you sharpen your skill at listening to instructions Write a question asking for instructions or for directions, then answer the question in only three or four sentences. Memorize your answer. Examples: How do you correctly open a new book? How do you get to the local medical center from your house? How do you get a ketchup stain out of a blue shirt? What is the term project in history class? How do you fold whipped egg whites into a cake mixture? How do you open this combination lock? Where is the closest bakery to the school?

How to Present Tear off the question at the bottom of the activity sheet and fold in half When you are called on, draw a question from the container and read out loud. The person’s whose question it is will answer the question slowly and clearly. You must repeat the answer using as many of the speaker’s words as possible. If the speaker decides you are not correct, the directions will be repeated and you must listen again before replying. Continue until your reply is accurate.
