Let’s take a look at last night’s homework!

Partner Work—If you don’t finish, it is homework. Look back at the words and phrases you highlighted in your assigned color. Write a brief paragraph answering the questions to the right. Consider point of view and tone words as you analyze your topic.

Reservation Life Possible Answer: In the words and phrases related to life on the reservation, there seems to be a pattern of being sarcastic, and of using the third-person. This seems to reveal that Alexie has a complicated relationship with where he grew up and the impact of his background on his identity.

How Others Treat American Indians Possible Answer: In the words and phrases related to the treatment of American Indians, there seems to be a pattern of words with negative connotations like dangerous, stupid, fail, never. There is also a pattern of seeing low expectations for what others believed a American Indian was capable of. This seems to reveal that Alexie is not afraid to call out the injustice and racism he sees in the United States’ treatment of American Indians, and that this treatment is something that gets Alexie fired up and angry.

Other American Indians Possible Answer: In the words related to other American Indians, there seems to be a pattern of pointing out how Alexie’s peers’ actions conform to the low expectations society has for them. This seems to reveal how Alexie is frustrated and even impatient with those who share his background, and don’t fight against these expectations; Alexie seems to believe that everyone should take advantage of the opportunities that reading, writing, and education offer the way that he did.

Homework Look at Page 263 of your purple guidebooks. Fill in an entry for each of the vocabulary words we discussed in class today—avid, prodigy, and subverted. This chart will be an ongoing assignment comparable to the one we did with theme last quarter—make sure you do not get behind! You will turn it in at the end of the 9 weeks.

“Superman & Me” by Sherman Alexie Lesson 2

I Can… Determine how an author uses rhetorical appeals to impact an audience. 9-10.RI.CS.6 Determine an author’s point of view or purpose and analyze how an author uses rhetoric to advance that point of view or purpose.

You Will Need… “Superman and Me” starting on page 339 of your purple guidebook The “Analyzing Figurative Language” handout on page 261-262 of the purple guidebook Writing utensil

Quick Review of Rhetorical Appeals Look at the handout on page 261 of your purple guidebooks. Let’s discuss! Analyzing an author’s use of figurative language allows a reader to understand the author’s tone, point of view, and central idea in an informational text.

Let’s Practice Example of figurative language in the text Paraphrase the sentence What effect does this example have on the reader? What rhetorical appeal is Alexie using in this example? “We lived on a combination of irregular paychecks, hope, fear, and government surplus food.”

Let’s Practice Example of figurative language in the text Paraphrase the sentence What effect does this example have on the reader? What rhetorical appeal is Alexie using in this example? “We lived on a combination of irregular paychecks, hope, fear, and government surplus food.” Alexie’s family didn’t always have a regular income, so they were always going between feeling hopeful that their future was looking up, and feeling fearful that they would not have enough money for basic things.

The contrast between the concrete items on the list, the paychecks and the food, and the emotions, hope and fear, is jarring for the reader. The details of the items on the list also help the reader understand the situation the family was in and interpret how that must have felt.

Partner Work—Complete the analyzing figurative language handout with your partner. Guiding Questions for Additional Support: How would you rewrite this example in your own words? What craft, literary device, or literary element is the author using in this example? What impact does this craft, literary device, or literary element have on the meaning in the text? Which appeal most closely aligns with the impact on the reader?
