UNIT 3- THE EARLY REPUBLIC (1789- 1830s) “Federalist era”- Washington and Adams presidencies What precedents were set as the nation begins? Different visions of America: the birth of political parties What issues divided early America? HW: Jefferson vs. Hamilton

RANK: ISSUE: GW movie   Foreign affairs: Align the US with foreign countries (get allies) Organize the Executive Branch/ Pick advisors (nothing mentioned in the Constitution except a vice-president). Set up a Supreme Court (Constitution set up courts but is vague on the details). Debt from Revolution: Have states pay off their debts Territory: Acquire more land in the US Establish law and order: Be prepared to put down rebellions (no more Shays’s Rebellions) Follow the Constitution: follow it closely or use the elastic clause to expand power and get things done? National Bank: Create a national bank to solidify the economy French Revolution: Should the US help or stay out of it (pick one)? Wild Card – pick one other issue you would want to resolve as the country’s first president.

Many of these precedents become part of the UNWRITTEN Constitution As the first president under the new constitution, many decisions made by George Washington were PRECENDENTS: (EXAMPLES) followed by future presidents. Many of these precedents become part of the UNWRITTEN Constitution Examples from movie? Accepted ideas and practices in the American government that are NOT IN the actual Constitution
