Writing the Conclusion Grade 6

Argument Writing Standards Write arguments to support claims with clear reasons and relevant evidence. Produce clear writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience. Provide a concluding statement or section that follows from the argument presented.

Explicit Instruction DIRECTIONS Read the articles Positive Advertising in Schools and Ad Bombardment which are all about advertisements in schools. WRITING PROMPT Write to argue whether or not it is acceptable for companies to advertise in schools. Your essay must be based on ideas and information that can be found in the passage set.

Explicit Instruction Manage your time carefully so that you can: read the passages; plan your response; write your response; and revise and edit your response. Be sure to: use evidence from multiple sources; and avoid overly relying on one source. Your response should be in the form of a multi-paragraph essay. Write your essay in the space provided.

Concluding Techniques A conclusion should: Stress the importance of/clarify the thesis Synthesize, not summarize Give the essay a sense of completeness Leave a final impression upon the reader Answer the question, “So what?”

Concluding Techniques Strategies to use: Explore the consequences (positive and negative) Challenge the reader (call to action) Look to the future (cause the reader to apply the information to his/her own life) Pose questions (give the reader a new perspective) Raise unexpected value (what can the reader learn/gain as a result of the thesis/essay)

Sample Conclusion Stress Thesis Companies have unique opportunity when advertising in schools. They can choose to advertise in ways that enhance the students’ academic career, such as promoting colleges and ways to give back. Without ads in schools, how would students learn about different ways to support the community and get help when they need it? As long as school officials are regulating what type of ads are coming into the school, is there really any harm in companies promoting themselves if it leads to the betterment of the students? So What? Pose a Question

Guided Practice Write to argue whether or not it is acceptable for companies to advertise in schools. With your partner, complete the handout. Be prepared to share out.

Independent Practice Write to argue whether or not it is acceptable for companies to advertise in schools. Independently, write your conclusion. Use your handout as a reference.
