AP Essays There is one poetry essay, one prose, and one open-ended question. I like to think of literature as a painting and authors as artists. What is the painting making you think or feel (the emotional message)? How did the artist get you to feel that way (colors, brush strokes, type of paint…in literature, we call these “literary terms”) For each, you’ll have a topic. I like to think of this as the “hint” for the first question. Your thesis is guided by the topic, but must be more specific.

Topic Thesis (answers the question “What?” So, “What is Eliot’s view on leisure in society in her own time?”) Evidence (answers the question “How?” So, “How does Eliot convey that view?” HINT: She does it through the use of ____________.) Evidence

Topic Thesis (answers the question “What?” So, “What kind of impact does McCarthy’s dramatic experience have on the main character, and what does that mean to the reader”?) Evidence (answers the question “How?” So, “How does McCarthy convey that view?” HINT: Hedoes it through the use of ____________.) Evidence

Topic Thesis (answers the question “What?” So, “What is the relationship between the husband and wife? What meaning does the relationship convey?”) Evidence (answers the question “How?” So, “How does Eliot convey that view?” HINT: She does it through the use of ____________.) Evidence

“An ounce of practice is worth a ton of theory” “The Flowers” Topic: “Loss of innocence” Thesis Evidence “Silence - A Fable” Topic: “Man’s place in society and nature” “The Lottery” Topic: “Traditions and norms” “Cannibals in The Cars” Topic: “Politics” “The Story of an Hour” Topic: “Feminine liberation” Personification Point of View Symbolism Theme Imagery Flashback & Foreshadow Metaphor & Simile Motif Narration Characterization & Motivation Dialogue Tone & Mood Setting Allegory Epiphany Irony (situational, dramatic, & verbal) Omniscient Dialect Archetype & Stereotype Paradox Foil Allusion Pastoral In medias res Diction Hyperbole And others!!!

“The Flowers” Topic: “Loss of innocence” Thesis: “A loss of innocence occurs when one has a traumatic experience at a young age Evidence: Characterization-How Myop changes as the story progresses Evidence: Imagery of Death and Decay, Darkness Evidence: Symbolism – Murder, a killing

“Silence - A Fable” Topic: “Man’s place in society and nature” Thesis: Silence is not meant for society. A man is frightened of silence because of the realization that there is nothing there. Evidence: Irony- stays calm through lightning and thunder, but is scared after the silence. Evidence: Tone/mood- beginning of the story a happier mood and towards the end becomes darker Evidence: Imagery- the water, lilies, heaven, and horizon. Towards end- thunder, lighting, demon

“The Lottery” Topic: “Traditions and norms” Thesis: As a whole, we conform to societal norms and traditions despite our own feelings, morals or ethics. Evidence - characterization Evidence - irony Evidence - tone/mood (Really good thesis. I would have liked to have seen exact quotes of “characterization” or “irony” etc.)

“Cannibals in The Cars” Topic: “Politics” Thesis: Cannibalism in the Cars depicts government as ineffective and insane. Political Jargon Dialogue Metaphor (I would have liked to seen specific quotes)

“The Story of an Hour” Topic: “Feminine liberation” Thesis (I would have liked to have seen a thesis) Evidence: Conveyed through the use of symbolism of the window and how it represents freedom Evidence: Foreshadows the heart condition and how it represents the end with men saying that she was just simply happy Evidence: The motif of freedom throughout the entire piece
