"There's no art To find the mind's construction in the face: He was a gentleman on whom I built, An absolute trust." The speaker of this quote is Duncan and the words are being spoken to his son, Malcom. The situation at the time the words are spoken is that Malcom has come to explain to Duncan that the Thane of Cawdor has been executed. Duncan’s reply to Malcom is “ There’s no art to find the mind’s construction in the face. He was a gentleman on whom I built an absolute trust.” Duncan means literally that you can’t judge a book by its cover. There’s nothing in a man’s face that can tell what he is thinking. He comments that Cawdor was a gentleman, whom he built the highest amount of trust in and never knew his evil, traitorous ways.
