MALE ACCESSORY ORGAN NOTES

EPIDIDYMIS Site of sperm maturation and storage

VAS DEFERENS Stores sperm for several months and propels them toward urethra during ejaculation

SEMINAL VESICLE Secrete alkaline, viscous fluid that makes up about 60 % of volume of semen

PROSTATE GLAND Surrounds urethra Secretes a milky, alkaline fluid that makes up about 25 % of the semen

BULBOURETHRAL/ COWPER’S GLANDS Secrete an alkaline mucus in response to sexual stimulation, and lubricate penis for intercourse

SEMEN Mixture of sperm and secretions from accessory glands Contains 120 million/ ml average Ave. volume of ejaculate is about 2- 6 ml.

Provides fluid for transport, nutrients, and neutralizes acid in male urethra and female vagina

PENIS Conveys urine and semen to outside of body Root – base of penis, body and glans penis (enlarged tip of penis)

Body – made of three cylindrical masses two corpora cavernosa and corpus spongiosum fills with blood during erection Glans penis – enlarged tip of penis

EJACULATION Emission of semen Triggered by presence of semen in urethra through spinal nerves in sacral portion of cord.
