Spiritual Gifts… Today? What are spiritual gifts? 1 Cor. 12:7-11 Word of wisdom Word of knowledge Faith Healing Miracles Prophecy Discerning of spirits Tongues Interpretation of tongues ability to speak new revelations. ability to speak truth already revealed. energy of faith that has divine power. ability to miraculously heal. manifestations of extraordinary power. ability to reveal the future. ability to discern between true & false. ability to speak in new languages. ability to interpret languages.

Spiritual Gifts… Today? What are spiritual gifts? 1 Cor. 12:7-11 “Spiritual” – supernatural; miraculous (1 Cor. 12:1, 11). Not all Christians had them (1 Cor. 12:29-20; 14:16). Possession was not a sign of spiritual maturity (1 Cor. 1:4-7; 3:1-3). Their use was for edification of all, not for ones own personal benefit (1 Cor. 12:7; 14:12). They were temporary (1 Cor. 13:8).

Spiritual Gifts… Today? What was the purpose of spiritual gifts? To reveal and confirm God’s word (Mk. 16:17-20; Heb. 2:2-4). To profit everyone (1 Cor. 12:7; 14:12).

Spiritual Gifts… Today? How did people obtain these gifts? Directly from the Holy Spirit Day of Pentecost (Acts 2:1-4). At the household of Cornelius (Acts 10:44-46). Both of these occasions were special, unique, one-time events that had a special purpose behind them.

Spiritual Gifts… Today? How did people obtain these gifts? Indirectly, through laying on of the apostles’ hands. At Samaria (Acts 8:14-19). At Ephesus (Acts 19:1-6). At Rome (Rom. 1:11).

What About Timothy? (1 Tim. 4:14). Spiritual Gifts… Today? How did people obtain these gifts? What About Timothy? (1 Tim. 4:14). Timothy received his gift by an apostle laying hands on him (2 Tim. 1:6). “with” – “the attendants of what is done or occurs.” (Thayer). “by” – “the means or instrument by which anything is effected.” (Thayer). Timothy received his gift by Paul, accompanied with the elders.

Spiritual Gifts… Today? How long were these gifts to last? They were temporary (1 Cor. 13:8). Until “that which is perfect” came (1 Cor. 13:10). What is “the perfect”? - Completed divine revelation.

Spiritual Gifts… Today? “That which is perfect” Divine Revelation Contrast between what is in part with that which is perfect (1 Cor. 13:9-10): In part Knowledge, prophecy, i.e., the revelation of God’s mind. Perfect The complete revelation of God’s mind.

Spiritual Gifts… Today? “That which is perfect” Divine Revelation Two illustrations (1 Cor. 13:11-12): Contrast between infancy and maturity. Contrast between a vague image and a clear image.
