TKAM Scottsboro Trial and Martin Luther King Jr's "I Have a Dream" To Kill a Mockingbird

Scottsboro Trial Rampant racism made it unlikely that African Americans would receive a fair trial In 1931, nine young men from Alabama were falsely  accused and put on trial for raping two white women They were eventually found not guilty

The Scottsboro Case On March 25th, 1931, a fight broke out between a group of black men and white men aboard a freight train headed to Memphis When the train stopped in Painted Rock, Alabama, all the young black men, even those who were not involved in the fight, were taken into custody Making matters worse, two young white woman accused the men of raping them They were put on trial twice and sentenced to death. Their murder trials each only lasted one day.

Injustice The men’s lives were put into the hands of two local lawyers They were put on trial twice and sentenced to death both times. Their murder trials each only lasted one day. The juries came to a decision within an hour and a half. The second trial had the same result despite defense attorney Samuel Leibowitz defending the men. The decision was overturned and a retrial was granted in which Leibowitz was able to prove that even though black people should have been able to serve in the jury, they were prevented from doing so

Clear racism It took more than 20 years to exonerate these men, and they suffered greatly as the case was tried over and over until finally these innocent men were freed since they had done nothing wrong

Martin Luther King, Jr. Born on Jan. 15, 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia He was assassinated in April of1968 James Earl Ray shot Dr. King while he was standing outside on his balcony at the Lorraine Motel Ray was sentenced to 99 years in prison. King was a Civil Rights Activist who was imprisoned for speaking up for equality and his belief that all people are human and should be treated as equal. The demonstration for which he is best known was the March on Washington that took place in 1963.

Response to Martin Luther King Jr’s speech: Do you think that in today's society individuals are judged by the content of their character and not by their race? Give examples to support your opinion. Do prejudice and discrimination exist today? Explain. What is being done to realize Dr. King's dream in 2017? Do you think that Dr. King's dream has become a reality? Why or why not? http://www.cnn.com/2009/LIVING/studentnews/01/11/activity.mlk.speech/index.html
