Commander-in-Chief From 1916 Sir Douglas Haig c. 60 Divisions Armies – Of no fixed size, between 200,000 and 300,000 men. Commanded by a General. Divisions – Could contain as many as 12,000 infantry. Combined with support troops and artillery could contain as many as 19,000 soldiers. Commanded by a Major General. Brigades – Three brigades in a division. Each brigade contained Four battalions and between 3000 and 4000 men. Commanded by a Brigadier General. Corps – A formation containing two or more changing divisions. Commanded by a Lieutenant General. Battalions – Made up of four companies and could be as big as 997, but was rarely this big. Company – Made up of four platoons. About 200 men. Commanded by a Major or Captain. Platoon – Around 50 men. Commanded by a Lieutenant. Section – Up to a dozen men. Commanded by a Corporal.
